Why has ceativitiy so important in our life? To understand this, we need to see its enormous implications. Let’s look at it. Not theoretically. Just look at it as it is. Creativeness only comes into being when there is deep discontent.

People are afraid of being discontented. Most of the time we are discontented, not because we want something, but without knowing what we want. Look at your life. You just cling to labels and words. You are striving to become something. In every field you are emphasizing yourself, your prestige and your security. In every activity the self is the important thing. You want to be powerfull. Therefore, you are creating conflict.

Discontent with everything so that you begin to think. Be discontent with your job, with the traditonal pursuit of position, power. When we don’t accept, but question, there is an insight out of which comes creativitiy. When you are discontented with everyting and are not seeking a result, then that discontent brings your thought into focus. Your whole thinking process becomes very simple. And at the same time it is important to be happy. One must be discontented, not complainingly, but with joy. With love.

If you can be in revolt while you grow older keep your discontent alive with the vitality of joy, then that discontent will have an extraordinary significance. Because it will bring new things in your life. Don’t be afraid of discontent. For this you must have the right kind of education. Right kind of education requires a greate deal of intelligence. That is why it is so important for the educator to understand the whole process of life. What we now call education puts the student to sleep. If you ask really sharp questions, the teacher gets very disturbed and say, “Let’s talk about something different.”

Talk with your educators and you will soon find out how ideas and beliefs can also become property. Teaching is not only a job. It is an act of dedication. Teachers can explain things, but their explanations may be wrong. It is good to be sceptical. Because it gives you a chance to find out for yourself whether you need a teacher at all. It is part of education. It is interesting to find out what learning is. We learn how to design from a book, or from a teacher. There is also another kind of learning that comes through experience. To face of discontent, that extraordinary feeling of joy, and not be frightened when it comes. Look at it. Understand it. We try to run away from discontent through sex, through work, through drink, through write and read, through design. What is important is to be your own master. To be both the teacher and the pupil.

Just look at yourself without condemning, without comparing yourself with somebody else. It is you who want to know the meaning of creativitiy and freedom. When you carefully observe, you will see that there is no freedom. Years and years we work in a small room. We work with a little color monitor. Thinking that we have grasped life. And it is extraordinarily difficult to go outside. Most of us think that through the part we shall understand the whole. Just observe what you are and move with it. You will find that it is possible to go infinitly far. And see there is no end. If you do not look through any idea or belief, then everything around you becomes extraordinarily interesting. Tremendously creative. That is the mystery, the beauty of creativeness.

If you don’t know how your mind works, you will never find out what design is. Your mind is not apart from your culture. You are part of the society. From the moment you are born and begin to recive impressions. Your parents are constantly telling you what to do and what not to do. To be free of that pattern you have to understand the whole process. Culture is made up of all your beliefs. You have to see how your mind works. Watch your mind. You are dominated by what your parents and teachers say. You are striving to become somebody. When all this competitiveness is removed that there will be a peaceful society in which we will able to live creatively. To be creative requires giving up one’s egocentricity and selfishness. When there is honestly and sincerely no self emphasis in any design actvitiy, then creativitiy has little meaning.

Love is a productive activitiy. It means caring for, responding, enjoying. If you really love to be a designer, not gain recognition but just you love to do it. Then you will never compete with another. To love what you do. This is the realitiy. If you design just because you need to earn enogh money, or because your teacher expects it of you. This is compulsion, and compulsion creates conflict. Name, property, wealth and family are like your shadow as you walk in the sun. These are based on our desire for security. In the state of joy you don’t relly on anyone psychologically because you are no longer seeking gratification. It is only such a mind is creative.

Discovery and understanding come through self-knowlege. The moment you say, “I have designed, I am a greate designer because I have found out this.” You are lost. If we make problem rosy, then we can’t see the whole. If you look at the problem and see it exactly as it is, then you will be able to understand. How you talk, how you walk, how you treate people, how you design and sell are very important things. Because they act like mirrors. Life and also design can not be understood from a book, nor can be discovered by traveling. You can only understand it only when you are fully alive, watcful. Out of this understanding comes grate love. Then you will see what it is to be happy. Then you will know what beauty is.
